Itinerary
The first day of the trip will kick off with a visit to Saint Sargis Church, beautifully situated on the left bank of the Hrazdan River Canyon, overlooking the 16th-century Yerevan fortress. Next, we will head to the Matenadaran, home to one of the largest manuscript collections in the world. A visit to the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral is a must, as it symbolizes the 1700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity as a state religion. This impressive complex consists of three churches and spans an area of 3,822 square meters. After lunch, the tour will proceed to the Holy See of Echmiadzin, the global religious center for Armenians, where the residence of the Catholicos Supreme Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church is found in its main cathedral, one of the earliest official Christian cathedrals. We will also explore the historic Saint Hripsime (Saint Arsema) Church, founded in 618. After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, the second day’s tour will take you to the picturesque canyon of the Azat River. Here, you will visit the 7th-century Geghard Cave Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled deep within the canyon. Following the monastery tour, the journey continues by bus to Garni village, home to the Hellenistic Garni Temple. The site also features a royal bath that showcases an intriguing hypocaust system alongside well-preserved original mosaic flooring. Next, the tour will make a stop at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, dedicated to honoring the victims of the 20th century’s most significant crime against humanity and raising awareness within the global community. Following breakfast, the tour will head south towards Armenia. Approximately 40 kilometers from Yerevan, you'll visit Khor Virap, a historic site nestled in the Ararat Valley. This location was once home to a monastery and the prison where Gregory the Illuminator endured 13 years of suffering for spreading Christianity in Armenia. On clear days, the biblical Mount Ararat appears incredibly close from Khor Virap. The next destination is Noravank Monastery, which requires a scenic drive through a narrow canyon to reach the valley of striking red rocks. This area is renowned for its unique grape variety, "Areni," which is used to produce the famous Areni wines. A stop at a local winery for a tasting of exquisite wines is a must. The tour will then proceed southeast to Karahunj, an ancient 7,500-year-old observatory often referred to as the "Armenian Stonehenge." This day is devoted to exploring the stunning monastery of Tatev, a gem of Armenian medieval architecture. Due to its strategic location, Tatev remained inaccessible to enemies of the Armenian Kingdom for centuries, allowing it to remain well-preserved. Visitors have the option to experience a ride on the world’s longest cable car, which soars over the 320-meter-deep Vorotan River Canyon. On the return journey, there will be a drive down into Vorotan Canyon and a crossing over the "Devil’s Bridge." The tour will then proceed to the Selim Caravanserai, a 14th-century hostel that stands as one of the best-preserved structures along the ancient Great Silk Road. From this location, breathtaking views of the expansive valley and surrounding mountains can be enjoyed. Just a few kilometers later, the scenery shifts dramatically, leading to Lake Sevan, known as the blue pearl of Armenia, situated at an elevation of 1,900 meters above sea level. After enjoying a fresh cup of coffee in the morning, we will make our way to the Sevan Peninsula. The breathtaking view from the hilltop overlooks the azure lake, framed by surrounding mountains, creating a sense of both inspiration and humility. Sevanavank Monastery, established in 874 by an Armenian princess, is perched on this hilltop. Next, the journey continues to Dilijan, a verdant town renowned as a spa resort. A leisurely walk through the historical district allows you to immerse yourself in the ambiance of the old town as it was in the 19th century. The intricately carved balconies, characteristic of 19th-century Dilijan, reflect the region's historical affinity for exquisite woodwork. The tour then progresses to Hagartsin Monastery, dramatically situated amidst stunning mountains dense with forests. After enjoying a fresh coffee and a delicious breakfast, the day begins with a trip to the Lori region of Armenia. The itinerary includes a visit to the Sanahin Medieval University, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the intricate reliefs depicting biblical scenes and characters while soaking in the enchanting old auditorium of Sanahin University. In addition to its architectural wonders, the Lori region boasts stunning landscapes featuring lush forests, the dramatic Debed River canyon, and charming villages nestled along the canyon. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant, where you can sample traditional Armenian dishes. As you make your way back to Yerevan, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views from the Lori highlands, where the nearby Pambak Pass offers spectacular glimpses of the four-peaked Mount Aragats. You will also stop to explore a well-preserved 4th-century basilica in the town of Aparan, then continue to Saghmosavank Monastery, situated on the edge of the deep gorge carved by the Kasakh River. Don't miss the opportunity to visit Saint Gevorg Church in the village of Mughni. As night approaches, you will return to your hotel in Yerevan for relaxation, dinner, and an evening at your leisure.
